Here's a trick for a good sound on a guitar cab using two SM-57 mics.
Put two Sm-57's side by side with one mic a capsule length ahead of the other one ( front of one mic where the end of the front of the other mic is, that's the band around the mic where it says SM-57 ).
The difference in distance between them will create a comb filter but with good effect and will automatically drop some frequencys that would usually be subtractively eq'd.
The live sound guys at school swore by this method and used it every single time.

sorry, where are you actually placing these mics. distance and placement wise i mean i get one is closer than the other but what, you dangeling them down off the cab? off -axis on stands? I'm confused.

as long as they are place exactly the same just one next to each other and slightly back it will have the same effect wether on or off axis.
