| Hi. I have some questions about MIDI. Anyone who can answer some or all will gain my respect. 1. What is the Roland extended version of MIDI called? 2. What is the Yamaha extended version of MIDI called? 3. How many MIDI channels can pass through a standard MIDI lead? 4. How many MIDI channels can pass through a USB lead? 5. What do the following continuous controller numbers control? 10, 11, 0, 91, 7 6. What do the following program changes change the sound to? 5, 42, 71, 50, 110 7. Give a definition of the following: "multi-timbral", "monophonic", and "velocity sensitive" Remember, there's some respect up for grabs!!

| Hi Pink: Okay, I'll take a stab at these - I'm sure I'll get corrected if I'm wrong. 1. What is the Roland extended version of MIDI called? Roland GS - or "General Standard". 2. What is the Yamaha extended version of MIDI called? Yamaha XG. 3. How many MIDI channels can pass through a standard MIDI lead? Umm, I guess up to the max bitrate of 31.2kbps? I mean, each port has 16 channels but you can daisy chain several instruments with a cable carrying much more than that. That's my best guess. 4. How many MIDI channels can pass through a USB lead? Following on from my last guess, I suppose considerably more - up to the maximum carried by a 480Mbps USB v2.0 cable (or 12Mbps for USB v1.1)? 5. What do the following continuous controller numbers control? 10, 11, 0, 91, 7 Pan, Expression, Bank Select, Reverb Send, Volume. 6. What do the following program changes change the sound to? 5, 42, 71, 50, 110 Electric Piano 1, Viola, Bassoon, String Ensemble 2, Bagpipe. 7. Give a definition of the following: "multi-timbral", "monophonic", and "velocity sensitive" Multitimbral: an instrument which can generate several voices at once. Monophonic: a recording with only one channel. Velocity sensitive: the ability of an instrument to respond to the dynamics of play - ie: hitting a keyboard key harder will result in a louder sound. Hope that helps. Cheers, Dave.

Hey Lawrence:
Well, soon we'll be launching the rest of the HoofJaw.com site, and all this will be listed in the "Resources" section of the the site. We'll have full explanations of MIDI, GM bank maps, type 0 and 1 files, controller maps, etc...
If there is anything that you or anyone else would like to see there, either drop me a note (dave@hoofjaw.com) or leave a post under "Site Suggestions" and I'll make sure it is there for launch.
Cheers, Dave.

The best place for now to learn Midi is the web or a good book store.

| ... which reminds me. As I put together a page on MIDI, the technology, a FAQ and other resources, if anyone would like to volunteer to help review or contribute please let me know. That'd be a magnificent help! Cheers, Dave.
