Viruses are free.
2. Viruses don't take up most of your hard drive.
3. Viruses don't need 80 megs of RAM.
4. Viruses don't have major bugs.
5. Viruses don't have three different sets of documentation.
6. Viruses don't leak info to the press about the upcoming Jerusalem 95, to keep people from switching to Michelangelo/2 Warp.
7. Viruses aren't on every computer.
8. Nobody cares if a virus turns out to be 16 bit, even though it is advertised as 32...
9. Viruses install themselves

Temples of Kerala

:w00t: The temples of Kerala preserve and symbolize the rich heritage and customs of the land. What do you think of them ? Studio owners and engineers, what do you think of these schools ?
Are they worth the money ? Does it really matter to a studio if anyone went to one of these schools ? They range from being very expensive to ridiculously expensive, for instance that school called full sail costs like $30,000. At the end of school all you got is an internship somewhere, for that much money a person could buy a lot of equipment to start their own home studio, and anybody off the street can get an internship anyways, not just school graduates.
All the fundamentals don't take long to learn ( microphones, placement and technique, signal flow, acoustics, science of sound, etc. ) and in the end it all comes down to familiarity and hands on practice and experience on whatever individual equipment you will be using anyways.
Seems like they lure people in with pictures of all their fancy studios and equipment and then milk ya and drag the training into months and months because most schools cirriculums include all types of audio applications like film post production, live sound, analog, digital, tape, etc. and even courses like music business, computer hardware classes, how to build a website, etc. wich take weeks or months devoted to those type of classes.
The big ones take months to train people on individual consoles like the big neve and ssl consoles, even courses that take weeks or months just teaching you how to operate the built in computer on ssl consoles.
Of course none of that is relevant at all to anybody unless they are going to be working on those specific consoles, wich means somehow getting hired at a major studio, nobody can afford that stuff for their home studio.
Just wondering if anybodys gone this route or what those in the industry think about going this route, I have to admit that I went to one of these schools and paid an enormous amount of money for school and then a ton more to pay for rent in a major city while interning, working long hours for free. The industry is unique in the fact that it has a neverending supply of free labor and as soon as they spit one person out there's another one at the door. The admissions department at the school i went to said they had an 85% hire rate for students but later I found out it was actually 12% and even that's probably an exageration. Not one person from my class ever got hired anywhere yet one classmate is on project staff at school and tells me the very occasional success story of some student getting hired and making $70 an hour somewhere because the timing was right and he lucked out on the place he picked to intern at, 12% is not good odds at all.
My intention in writing this post was twofold, one - to see if there's anybody else out there who went to one of these schools and to hear their story, two- to warn those who are maybe thinking about going to one of these schools.
Ya gotta follow yer dreams of course and if yer young you have plenty of time, but if yer an older person considering going to a school and actually making a living after investing a ton of money in all that then I would definitely advise doing something more practical or spending all that money on yer own equipment because by far most graduates either end up completely out of the audio field or starting their own home studio.
I'm not bitter, I learned a lot and had fun and knew it would be difficult and is a tough biz to get yer foot in the door, but if I had known that I only had a 12% chance I wouldn't have done it.
Some things to consider if you are thinking about going to one of these schools, but then again you gotta follow yer dreams too and pay yer dues out there, just ask yerself if yer up to paying yer dues ( as they call it ) for what could be years with absolutely no gauranties whatsoever, but then people do win the lottery sometimes.

Drawbar Organ Setups

I write and record music in a home studio. I have a really nice setup and just started getting into using a drawbar organ. I have a Casio keyboard which has a built in drawbar hardware for using the 9 bars found on the Hammon B3 (but in reality its not that good). I also use Native Instruments B4 software plus on the hardware controller and I find this to be a much better instrument.

I was hoping that we could get a discussion going with regard to how everyone sets up their drawbar organs (synth or otherwise). Which bars do you use for different sounds. How much do you activate them. Do you use 2nd and 3rd harmonics. I mostly am looking for a Matchbox 20 type of drawbar sound. Nothing to forward... just something to hover in the back of a mix. Any help would be killer.
